RESUMEN
Este trabajo analiza los sentidos de la palabra frontera en la documentación de los siglos XVIII y XIX relativa a la frontera sur rioplatense, con el propósito de atisbar qué percepción de los espacios fronterizos tenían los actores históricos de aquel período y lugar y de qué manera incidieron las sucesivas acepciones del término en la definición de políticas estatales hacia esas zonas (espacio militarizado con función defensiva separando un “afuera” y un “adentro”, avanzada de una movediza línea ofensiva, periferia - aún desarticulada geográfica, política y socialmente - de una nación en construcción).

FRONTIERS OF PAPER. THE SEMANTIC VOYAGE OF A WORD THROUGH HISTORICAL SOURCES OF THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES CONCERNING THE SOUTHERN FRONTIER OF THE RÍO DE LA PLATA.

ABSTRACT
This article analyses the meanings of the word frontier in historical sources of the 18th and 19th centuries concerning the southern frontier of the Río de la Plata, with the purpose of discerning what perception of the frontier spaces the historical actors had in that specific time and place and how those changing meanings affected the definition of state policies towards those regions (the frontier as a militarized zone with defensive functions, separating an "inside" from an "outside"; the frontier as the outer edge of a moving offensive line; the frontier as a periphery, still geographically, politically and socially disarticulated, from an emerging nation).
